Maison Foundation Cannes Equity & Representation Scholarship

In 2023, MAISON FOUNDATION is sending an initial cohort of scholarship recipients to the CANNES LIONS Festival of Creativity in Cannes, France June 19-23 to experience this coming together of the best of the best of the advertising industry firsthand. these are spaces we usually aren’t privileged to be in. our time is now.

Historically excluded people have to go to Cannes to explore new ways of reaching our communities and recognize the power we hold. Our culture, our swag, and our tenacious ingenuity in the face of systems that continue to exclude us are gold mines for marketers, so to make the change we want to see on our own turf, we have to kick down the door in the places where the money gets made. Cuz if they were going to invite us in, they would've done it already.

it’s so crucial and obvious to me that historically excluded people be present at Cannes. culture and subcultures particularly from POC communities have been a huge source of inspiration driving pop culture for decades. how can we as people be appropriately spoken to or even accurately portrayed if we’re not at the center of the work?

additionally, it’s an exposure thing. you don’t know what you don’t know. and if you’re not in or around this industry, chances are you’ve never heard of a Cannes Lion. so in addition to an educational opportunity, we see this as a foundational opportunity to explore spaces we haven’t been a part of and in turn, put the rest of the house up on game.

Freedom reigns from broken chains. Inclusion from exclusion information obtained understanding new inspiration. The minority finally seen. That’s the direction Cannes needs to take. To powers that be are you really doing all you can? Access to opportunities is all we need. A seat at the information table, inclusion in community. Endless possibilities of brilliant collaboration. Breaking barriers showing our peers what’s possible and that it is possible. To empower a generation that will foster ideas to innovate the future. Getting that one connection that can create a lifetime of value. Visibility alone can go a long way speak volumes to the unheard. Break the silence unmute our representation.
